The Perfect Team-Hines & Kym

It has been an obscenely long time since my last blog–two and a half months. And, coincidentally, the last one was about Hines and his evolving role on the team. The Steelers team. Now he has a new team, Hines and Kym and the whole nation is sitting up and taking notice. By the way, it was his idea to show off the Altoids in this photo, taken March 7, when Hines invited me to his house in Atlanta-not far from where they were practicing before heading back to LA.  He says you have to have fresh breath when you dance so closely to one another.

First, the house is stunning, and I can understand why Architectural Digest featured Hines on its cover last fall. Hines designed it, and oversaw every last detail. A mixture of clean lines, and lodge-like warmth, I kept gasping during the tour he gave me.  And speaking of stunning, Kym Johnson, his partner and coach, is that and more. She has competed in ballroom dancing since she was a child, and was a champion in her native Australia, before becoming a winner here in the States on DWTS. She wants to win just as badly as Hines, and he could not have been matched with a better person on the show!!!!!

And before we started the interview, Hines showed Kym a special book with all his photos from his many trips to his native Korea. It was a special moment we were privileged to witness. He told her about his work with bi-racial children like himself, and showed her the picture of his mother with Korea’s President, and in front of special monuments.

It was a tiny window into the process of building their chemistry that is so wonderfully apparent on the dance floor on television. I knew Hines has a super-bright mind, and a memory like a steel trap. But I am blown away with how dramatic the two of them are together. He is not just technically great, he is emotionally invested in the dances.

Just like he has been emotionally invested in our community. Sunday night, I attended the Project Bundle-up Auction Kick-Off Dinner at LeMont.

On hand were the W. PA Commander, Major Robert Reel and his wife, Major Lynette Reel, of the Salvation Army. Lynette told the crowd the most touching story about one of Hines’ shopping trips with two children who were in need of warm, winter outerwear. The entire room was in tears as she told of Hines’ heart and compassion, and his desire to go the extra mile for the kids.

You can see that kind of heart on the dance floor–so Steeler Nation–KEEP ON VOTING FOR HINES AND KYM!!!

  1. I am very upset with Hines Ward being on DWTS. I am NOT a football fan (I am not alone) which is my chioce and enjoy DWTS Every fall season one night of Dancing is pre-empted for Steelers football and is aired the next morning from 9-11am. Neither my husband or I can watch because we both work and this timing prohibits voting both by phone and internet because voting closes at 11. I admit I have “blind voted” but that is not the point. If Hines wants everyone to vote for him how hypocritical that is when the Steelers are the reason others do not get votes from Pittsburgh viewers. Could there possibly be an ABC altenative station offered locally so one could have a choice? CBS and NBC have just that.

    • I understand your frustration. I frankly don’t think that ever occurs to Hines. The players really don’t watch their own games, and they think the game is on ESPN, since that is the broadcast team that does it. WTAE picks up the game , and there is usually only one during the regular season.

  2. I’m lovin’ the Altoids! I always wondered about that…because that would totally be me….bringing out the Altoids (and I would def share, too *wink*!) thx for sharing that little tidbit. Go Hines!!!!
    He is sooooo good!

as for the lady upset about the ONE show she misses — ABC has live internet streaming of the show — so she should not miss an episode. If you don’t want to watch it live on your computer – you can easily hook it up to your tv, too.
So…enjoy! life is too short to be upset about one show — hope that helps! 🙂

    • I think Ralph Macchio may be his biggest competition, but I know Hines can beat him. But all these Steeler haters may vote for others, hurting Hines.

  3. ps….i missed the later interview when Hines and Kym were in Pgh…..and Sally teased “what is the one thing that Kym says Hines does that bugs her”…..or something to that effect.

That vid is not on the wtae website….nor part of the “raw” clip you have up….so i’m totally wondering — what IS it!?
    LOL…..thx…in advance! 😉

    • It is the fact that he overanalyzes everything, and has become obsessed with his own mistakes, as if he were a professional dancer. He will stop in the routine, and say he did it wrong, and she says, “I am the professional, I will tell you when you have done something wrong.” She calls it amazing, because he is thinking like a dancer. I think the video is not on the web, because it contained some dancing stuff from ABC.

  4. Congratulations to Hines and Kym for their wonderful dancing on DWTS. I wish they would do a performance to the beautiful, mesmerizing song/piece “Bolero”.

    • Who knows? They might if they have another opportunity for Classical again. I love that piece, and was made very famous with the Canadian Ice Dancing couple who won Olympic Gold. I think.

  5. No…ABC does NOT live stream DWTS. Already checked. I have decided I am done with DWTS. I love dance NOT football and I will watch So You Think You Can Dance on Fox instead. I understand Ward doesn’t think about the games being televised. My issue is with WTAE promoting him and then pre-emting so we can’t vote. Airing the show at 9-11 am doesn’t work even if one can watch then. I look forward to relaxing and watching the show. I work long hard hours. Voting closes at 11am. Isn’t anything excluded from sport pre-emtion?
